Meet Olerato — The Heart Behind Aweno

Aweno means “Praise Be to God.”

My name is Olerato, and Aweno was born from my love for Africa, its people, its creativity and the incredible artistry that exists across our continent.

I moved to England in 2004, at the age of 23, but Africa has always remained deeply rooted in who I am. I have always loved African clothing, jewellery and accessories—not only for their beauty, but for the stories, traditions and creativity they carry.

The idea behind Aweno began very simply.

During my time in South Africa, I met an incredibly talented woman who could create beautiful garments but didn't have the equipment she needed to develop her craft. I was so inspired by her work that I decided to buy her a sewing machine.

From there, something beautiful grew.

We began collaborating, combining her skills with beautiful African fabrics to create unique garments together. It made me realise how much talent already exists within our communities—and how sometimes a person doesn't need to be “saved”; they simply need access to the tools and opportunities that allow their talent to flourish.

I wanted to extend that same idea to other artisans.

We began working with jewellery makers too, providing materials such as beads and supporting them to create their own beautiful pieces. Today, Aweno brings together clothing, jewellery and accessories created through these relationships and collaborations.

For me, Aweno is more than a shop.

It is a way of celebrating African creativity while creating opportunities for the people whose hands and imagination bring these pieces to life. I want the world to see the beauty, skill and richness of African craftsmanship—and for the artisans behind that work to benefit from it.

Every piece carries something of Africa with it: creativity, colour, heritage and story.

This is Aweno.

Praise be to God.

Made with purpose. Rooted in Africa.
